Research has repeatedly shown that the hidden job market is by far the largest market segment and that applying directly to employers is the most effective job search method. Job seekers are often reluctant to use this proactive and direct method, not realizing that employers often are frustrated in their search for the right employee. By approaching them directly, you can save an employer the time and money they might otherwise spend to hire. You also can ensure that the job fit is right for you.
First identify those positions and industries to which your skills and abilities will be most valuable. Then call or write to the employer to ask for an information interview to learn more about the organization. Through this conversation you will have a chance to learn about any possible opportunities that may exist for you and they will learn about you and your skills and abilities. (Reminder: Never ask if they’re hiring or you’re likely to blow the ‘sale’.)
To make this easier we have provided direct links to business directories for you. The staff at Limestone Community Education have the expertise to help you develop a phone script, research companies or conduct an information interview. We invite you to contact us for personal assistance.
We’ve put together a number of resources to help you conduct a successful job search.
